"Naxos seems to be embarking on what promises to be a delightful series that shines the light on the soloists of the Vienna Philharmonic and at the same time serves as an introduction to certain instruments of the orchestra. This is the first volume; about two a year are scheduled. The instruments will be clarinet, horn, viola, flute, oboe, bassoon, cello, violin, trumpet, and trombone. If all of the recordings are of the quality of this one, it will be a series worth collecting.

Czech clarinetist Peter Schmidl, long-time first chair in Vienna and a professor at the Vienna Conservatory, has selected a terrific program that sets at least three benchmarks.

The Beethoven is simply outstanding...Pianist Inui and cellist Miteva, quite a few years younger than Mr Schmidl, play on a par with the leader in this fully committed and exceptional reading.

The Brahms fares as well... Schmidl and company strike the heart of the piece in an effusively murky manner.

The third unparalleled reading here is the delicate, romantic, yet curiously Webernesque Four Pieces by Alban Berg...These short works are played with fire and ice, and a rare sensitivity.

So there you have it: a great recording of great works by a great clarinetist.
