Muggianne, the latest contribution to Germano Mazzocchetti's valuable discography, is a surprising album. The surprise consists in the fact that the composer manages to write new, nonrepetitive, inspired music, while rigorously adhering to a very personal stylistic approach that is all his own, and finding his way through the many facets of an art that has fascinated connoisseurs for years. If you listen to Muggianne and then try to define the “genre” of music that it belongs to, you will realize just how hard it is to categorize Mazzocchetti's musical language, the lexical structure of his staves, and how it evades any kind of stylistic definition. Mazzocchetti's very strong roots in the central Italian region of Abruzzo, in his hometown of Città Sant’Angelo, and in the musical qualities of the local dialect (known as “Angolàno”) can be detected in every track on this album (as well as on his previous ones). And yet this music certainly can’t be classified within any ethnic or folk genre. The creative journey that led to Muggianne has been long and multifaceted. A skilful passion for jazz, as well as an in-depth knowledge of the classical symphonic and chamber music repertoires, operatic melodrama, musicals, and classic Neapolitan songs, are what gives Mazzocchetti such multifaceted musical talents, and he borrows with competence and ease from Puccini, Mingus, Stravinsky, Cioffi-Pisano, Alessandro Cicognini and Arvo Pärt. All of this can be heard in his compositions, even though direct quotations from these sources are practically inexistent and he always stays on the beaten track of a rigorous stylistic compactness. The Maestro Mazzocchetti has also been working for years in the world of theatre, and he is one of the leading composers of incidental music in the theatre and of musical commentary for the stage. He follows in the footsteps of the much-loved composer Fiorenzo Carpi and this has been a training ground for his eclectic narrative approach. It is therefore apparent that a great many different musical worlds have contributed to the creation of this inspired and mature record that stands out from the musical landscape dominated by Spotify, which is lamentably full of clones and copies.

Germano Mazzocchetti does not just “act” or “play” as a musician,
he truly “is” a musician, and this is the real difference between
those who have something to say musically, and those who
just have something to copy.
Playing alongside the accordionist-composer there is, of course,
also an ensemble of talented soloists who, after years of playing
this repertoire, have fully assimilated the deeper meanings of Mazzocchetti's phrasing.
