Sadly, I was out of town for the release bash of this new release from these lovers of all things soaked in reverb, but I didn’t want Young Blood by the Chris Martin Trio to pass by unnoticed.
Led by Halifax guitar picker Martin, the trio carves out a sound as big as a barn and twice as echoey, bridging that rockin’ blues gap with Chuck Berry and Howlin’ Wolf on one side, and Carl Perkins and the Johnny Burnette Trio on the other. A little extra dirt can always boost a tune, but it doesn’t hurt to let the guitar sing through clean and pure every now and again.
Just because he likes his sounds on the primitive side, that doesn’t mean Martin’s a slacker in the songwriting department. 12 Bar Blues (Searching for You) and When Money Gets Thick Again show he’s got as good an ear for a clever line as he does for a hot lick, and the songs have their own personal strengths that keep Young Blood from sounding like just another rockabilly retread.
