Among Dotzauer's many compositions, the 3 sonatas for two cellos are particularly engaging to listen to with a beauty and purity conceived of in a strict classical form. In each sonata, the 1st cello takes the melody and is accompanied by the second cello in a charming interplay. From soaring melodies to surging harmonic momentum, they are as fresh and noble in spirit as the compositions of Beethoven and Mozart. The development of rhythmic patterns is also interesting to note. For example: In the first movement of the third sonata, second subject, the rhythmic pattern is akin to the more well known 5th symphony of Beethoven. This is one of the many examples of these classical masters similarities. These sonatas were recorded on two wonderful cellos. Gaisford's 1706 Matteo Goffriller the "Warburg" and Mermagen's pristine 1774 Nicolo Gagliano.
