C’est à la Haute École de Musique de Genève où il étudie alors auprès de Nathalie Stutzmann que le contre-ténor Jonas Descotte fonde l’ensemble Les Argonautes, un ensemble à géométrie variable spécialisé dans la musique baroque. Si Jonas Descotte structure les grandes lignes de l’interprétation, il veut donner un maximum de liberté à ses musiciens dans leurs modes de jeu et dans leurs recherches du détail signifiant.
Le nom de son ensemble n’a pas été donné au hasard par ce jeune musicien. En choisissant de rendre hommage à Argos, célébré comme le premier navire de l’histoire, il se souvient aussi de sa propre épopée familiale autour de l’Atlantique, pendant six ans, à bord d’un catamaran. L’histoire des Argonautes semble alors être une parfaite métaphore de la politique de l’ensemble et de la propre expérience de son meneur : des héros au caractère bien trempé, fort de leurs exploits individuels, guidés par Jason pour canaliser les ressources de chacune et chacun.
Pour leur premier enregistrement, Jonas Descotte et Les Argonautes ont traversé la Manche, du moins symboliquement, pour cette version très habitée de Dido and Aeneas considéré comme le premier opéra, ou semi-opéra, composé en Angleterre. Enregistré à Genève au Temple de Chêne-Bougeries en 2021, le chef-d’œuvre de Purcell condense en moins d’une heure d’horloge toute la palette des sentiments humains que la musique peut évoquer, dans des formes multiples alliant comédie et tragédie. Jonas Descottes a construit son programme fort judicieusement, en faisant suivre ce bref opéra par des extraits du mask Circe dans lesquels l’évocation de l’Enfer fournit un excellent épilogue à la tragédie des amants de Carthage.
