Cet Étrange Éclat - a quartet of three low strings plus harpsichord - borrows its name from a poem by Louis Aragon and draws inspiration for its sonic exploration from the art of sfumato (blurred) in Leonardo da Vinci's painting. In a program ranging from Corelli to Jean-Baptiste Barrière, the four young artists, trained in particular by Christophe Coin, employ a wide range of timbres and manage to blend the violone (a large six-string bass viol whose register is similar to that of the double bass), the viola da gamba, the baroque cello and the harpsichord into a homogeneous sound.
