Ludwig Senfl was a Swiss born composer of the early 16th century, little of whose music has found itself onto record. This new recording, by the choir of Sidney Sussex, Cambridge, is an ideal introduction. One especially engaging feature is the use of a group of cornetts and sackbuts (Renaissance wind instruments) to support the voices. Thia adds extra resonance and poignancy to the already highly expressive melodic writing in the 'Gloria' of the Missa Paschalis (Easter Mass), a work which clearly pre-echoes Bach's great Mass in B minor in its style of writing.
Some instruments and a clutch of Senfls's excellent songs are also included, those for tenor being accompanied by gothic harp, an instrument which bears an uncomfortably close relationship to the ukulele. These are mainly love songs, and one of them (Im Maien - or 'In May') is distinctly (and surprisingly) bawdy. A rich enjoyable issue, full of discoveries and surprises.
