The global raï-pop icon makes a heartfelt, irresistible comeback.
Cheb Khaled led the generation of Algerian rai performers who emerged in the wake of rai-pop pioneers Bellemou Messaoud and Belkacem Bouteldja. His earliest musical influences were Umm Kulthum and Farid el-Atrache, although he was also indebted to such European artists as Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, and Jacques Brel. Khaled's big break came in 1985, when he was recognized as Algeria's official "King of Rai" at an Oran musical festival. In 1991 he signed a major recording deal with Polygram subsidiary Barclay, and his first major-label album, Khaled, arrived the following year, selling more than 100,000 copies and including the smash hit "Didi." In 1999 Khaled headlined the 1-2-3 Soleils concert in Paris, the biggest Algerian show ever staged in France. ~ Leon Jackson & Chris Nickson
