Seferis “I am forever walking, as if on a journey which began before me and will continue after me. From Corfu to Athens, from Athens to London, from Great Britain to Brittany. Once, on the top of the mountain of Psyloritis in Crete, a café-owner looked at me and said, without knowing who I was, “you there, you are moving in the circle of your life, and when you have completed it, your steps will take you back to your point of departure.” I discovered the harp at a turn in the tunnel of the London underground. Since then, I have held in my hands an instrument which, in my culture, has been silent for centuries. What would it have sounded like when that harpist 2400 years before Christ played his harp? To find out I started to sing. I sing the story of the woman who walks, all those songs in the oral tradition which have been passed down from mother to daughter and which have no age. In each song resounds the name of an island, the name of a town, Chios, Mytilene, Smyrna, Alatsata... I feel as if, from the ancient times of Homer, and from Sappho of Mytilene to the contemporary poets, the Aegean islands have never ceased to resound with rhymes, music and dances. All these melodies seem to have been made for this little harp which Greece had lost for so long. There is one thing I know.
