Versatile musician Nigel Short is probably best known as the conductor and founder of the a cappella chamber choir Tenebrae. Short launched his career as a soloist in opera and oratorio, while also singing in various choirs, like the Tallis Scholars and the King's Singers, with whom he served as countertenor for seven years. As a singer Short developed an interest in sacred music, from pre-Renaissance to modern, and his repertory in opera and oratorio was also quite broad. Since 2001, when Tenebrae was formed, Short has focused the ensemble's repertory mainly on sacred music, ranging from the works of Hildegard to contemporary pieces by Tavener, Talbot, and many others. But he leads his ensemble in many traditional and Christmas songs, as well as large-scale Classical works with orchestra by Mozart, Berlioz, Poulenc, and others. In such repertory Short and Tenebrae have performed and recorded with such ensembles as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the London Symphony Orchestra. Short has taken the ensemble on tour throughout the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, and the U.S. He can be heard as a singer in many of the King's Singers recordings from 1994-2001 on such labels as EMI and RCA. As the director of Tenebrae he has recorded for Signum UK, LSO Live, and Warner Classics. Nigel Short was born in Solihull, England, on August 16, 1965. He sang as a chorister at Solihull Parish Church and later enrolled at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied voice and piano. While Short freelanced in opera and concerto and served as a member of the Tallis Scholars in his early career, he also sang in large church choirs, first at Westminster Abbey and then at Westminster Cathedral. After the seven-year stint with the King's Singers, Short took a brief hiatus and then founded Tenebrae (2001). One of Short's early successes with Tenebrae was with his composition The Dream of Herod (2002), for baritone, organ, and choir. The work was issued on CD in 2003 by Signum UK, along with Christmas and traditional songs, as well as works by Peter Wishart, Howells, Gruber, and others. Short commissioned British composer Joby Talbot to write Path of Miracles, which Tenebrae premiered with great success in 2005. Among Short's later recordings is the 2009 Signum UK CD, What Sweeter Music: Songs & Carols for Christmas.
