A professional chamber choir formed and founded by former Westminster Cathedral chorister Nigel Short, Tenebrae made its first appearance in London in 2001. The group focused on medieval chant and renaissance pieces, but also took into account more contemporary source material for a new take on a very old sound. The group, whose members have backgrounds in some of the U.K.'s leading choral groups -- the Monteverdi Choir, the choir of Westminster Abbey, and the choirs of King's College, Oxbridge, for instance -- has toured all over the world and performed in such places as Spain, Bermuda, and the United States. With the majority of their recorded work being released on Signum Classics, the occasional one-off on other labels was not unheard of, and a live performance with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe was released on Warner Classics. What made Tenebrae even more of a standout in the choir scene was their insistence on performing only in candlelit situations, the difficulty of which led to the lighting -- as it were - being taken care of in-house, by Nigel Short and Tenebrae itself.
