“Free Three” brings together three key musicians from the Belgian jazz scene. Serge Lazarevitch, Nicolas Thys and Teun Verbruggen share the same musical tastes and cross stylistic borders to explore the moving landscapes of jazz and improvisation.
"Let's just play what we feel, what we like... What we feel like playing..."
This phrase perfectly sums up the musical spark that ignited Serge, Nicolas and Teun from their first concerts together and which naturally grew during the recording sessions.
More than anything else, “Free Three” is the fruit of three musicians actively tuned into each other. The playing speaks of trust without hierarchy, a shared desire for music that goes beyond genres and classifications – a space for freedom... The freedom that we now consider so precious.
From François Couperin to Ornette Coleman and not forgetting Thelonius Monk, Lee Konitz or György Ligeti, their repertoire is constantly recycling. There are original compositions and themes borrowed from traditional music, all of which open the door to their improvised conversations and soundscapes.
“Free Three” features 17 compositions, including "It Should Have Been a Normal Day", a homage to the victims of the Paris attacks in 2015 that the trio also later dedicated to the victims of the Brussels attacks in March 2016. A heartfelt hymn to freedom.
