Luxxury began in 2002 when Baron von Luxxury, inspired by LCD Soundsystem's call to arms "Losing my Edge", sold his guitar and bought a synthesizer. He then rerecorded his home-demo songs as 80's styled electro-pop, with disco beats and shimmering Giorgio Moroder-y synth replacing the guitar parts. While tongue-in-cheek at first, the resulting sonic makeover was undeniably infectious, and a new (old) future-retro sound was born. That first batch of bedroom demos was picked up by Chicago's Omega Point Records and had three sellout pressings as "The Drunk EP." Now, after three years comes Luxxury's full length debut. "Rock and Roll (is Evil)" was recorded and mixed in Berlin, Los Angeles, Brooklyn and San Francisco by resident singer/producer/tyrant von Luxxury. The 12 song album employs 1980's influenced electro beats, synths, heroic guitars and sardonic lyrics to chronicle the rise and fall of legendary 70 s Sunset Strip groupie Sable Starr. It features cover art by internationally renowned artist Jeremy Blake, who also created Beck's Sea Change cover, the art in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Punch Drunk Love" and was the subject of a recent exhibition at the SF MOMA. "Rock and Roll (is Evil)" kicks off with "Drunk" (as heard on Live 105, XFM and Virgin Radio London). Dirty Girls Need Love Too mixes two parts indie dance-rock a la The Faint with the future/retro glam of Ladytron and a splash of, dare we say, Frankie Goes to Hollywood. And the electro-rock hits keep coming, from radio favorites "Something Going On" (a cover of the classic by ABBA' s Frida) and "Sable Starr" (as heard on Rodney on the Roq on KROQ) to the newest single "Sweet and Vicious" the album evokes equal bits of New Order, The Cars and Daft Punk. Luxxury brings todays kids and tomorrow's adults the futuristic sounds of yesterday, but sexier, and properly groomed.
"Unbelievably addictive...14 stunning electronica anthems of pure balls out disco fury...Studio 54 never had music this good...a dazzling album!" --Subba Cultcha, London
"This mash-up of glam rock, disco and synth-pop, played at a thumping pace, comes on like a slightly nastier, sleazier Scissor Sisters fronted by Heaven 17's Glenn Gregory, and we rather like that in a band!" --New Noise, London
"Four and a half stars. One of the finds of the year. " --Synthpop.net
