The duo pianoworte is unique in the German-speaking music landscape. Since 1994, the Kiel-born pianist Bernd-Christian Schulze and the Vienna-born actor Helmut Thiele have dedicated themselves to a form of music that is seldom heard today: melodrama. Her trademarks are works for speaker and piano, in which words and music merge directly with one another. The main work on this CD is the famous Rilke setting by the composer Viktor Ullmann (1898–1944) who was murdered in Auschwitz: “The way of love and death of the cornet Christoph Rilke”. The composition is a kind of link between the romantic melodramas and contemporary literature, which in many places anticipates current compositional approaches. No less interesting is the world premiere recording of “Drei Melodeclamationen op. 68” by Anton Arensky (1861–1906) - here with German translations of the texts by Ivan S. Turgenev. While the first of the three pieces “How were once so beautiful, so fresh the roses” is still relatively popular, the other two works have so far remained largely unknown and are therefore an important addition to the repertoire in this first recording.
