Archie Campbell is a multitalented gentleman: formidable golfer, gifted landscape painter and a superb storyteller-humorist who likes a good cigar once in a while. He also happens to have a fine tenor voice, but that probably was obscured, until recently, by his other attainments.
Lorene Mann trekked to Nashville a few years ago to record as a vocalist and write songs. Her abilities, along with her loyalty, sincerity and willingness to work, won her an immediate place in Music City, US.A.; but the fact that she could project so accurately the content and feeling of songs in today’s idiom probably wasn’t even suspected until recently.
Enter A&R producer Bob Ferguson. Bob had the inspiration to record Archie and Lorene as a duet singing The Dark End of the Street, and it hit big.
Archie and Lorene re-create their first big hit in this, their first album. And they also sing Tell It Like It Is, My Special Prayer, If That's the Only Way, Warm and Tender Love and others that are good to the ear. For both of these fine people it's a brand new career - and they like it (which gives extra excite ment to the album, since you feel it).
The musical backing and recording of this premiére album just help to show that the Nashville Sound-or-attitude, in its relaxed, spontaneous approach, readily suits once disparate sounds of music. There are some rhythm & blues licks, a touch of rock, a flavor of gospel, some pop-country, or what one of the studio musicians dubbed '‘soul-country.”
It's an auspicious debut album for a new duet with a fascinating sound as ARCHIE AND LORENE TELL IT LIKE IT IS.
