Showcase chronologically compiles the five 10" singles released through Burial Mix in 1996 and 1997 by Rhythm & Sound, the experimental dub duo of Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. Fitting accessibility-wise somewhere between Von Oswald's dancefloor-aimed releases as Maurizio and the duo's atmospheric, less reeled-in material on Basic Channel under various aliases, Rhythm & Sound provides a means for Von Oswald and Ernestus to completely exorcise their affinity for dub. Where their other outlets bear the heavy influences of Chicago acid house and/or Detroit techno with a splash of Kingston dub, Rhythm & Sound is a cannonball dive into Jamaican climes. Each track has the elemental goods, the familiar syncopated thrust of traditional reggae, the echo chamber ambience, and mid-fi grittiness. But this isn't just machine dub; Paul St. Hilaire adds to the authenticity and accessibility, providing vocals on all of the A-sides (the B-sides are versions of the flip side, primely instrumental), riding the inviting riddims smoothly without being intrusive. His assuredly laconic and spectral intonations ("come again"; "bloodclot"; "tribulation, tribulation") are just as complementary to the easygoing flow as Dawn Penn's on her classic "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)." Fitting with the style they're paying tribute to, Rhythm & Sound's tracks pass by with all the authority and warmth of a gentle summer breeze -- the velocity of each track hovers around 120 beats per minute, rarely deviating from that pace. There might not be any scratchy guitars or wisps of melodica within earshot, but Showcase is genre blending and bending at its best, providing a reverential nod to traditional dub along with a brilliant diversion from the remainder of electronic-based output from Germany.
