At the end of the sixteenth century, rome, the spiritual centre of western Christianity, found itself confronted, after the coming of the reformation and the Council of trent, with the musical upheavals that were to give birth to the Baroque. Two trends were to emerge. in sacred music, the hegemony of polyphony, as reformed in the circles around Palestrina, created a new genealogy with which the masters of the seventeenth century were to identify. In the domain of secular music, the influence of the new style born in Florence and brought to its apogee by Monteverdi generated new music following on from the revolutionary invention of accompanied monody and the representation of the passions. Though apparently opposed, these two trends increasingly tended to intertwine and converge, forming the identity of the music of the Counterreformation. The secular, the sacred and Antiquity intermingled and were crystallized in new forms of expression.
