Xie Xuan was taught by the famous teacher Susan McDonald, and obtained a master's degree in music and an artist diploma from Indiana University. Later, he moved to Paris to study with harp masters Catherine Michel and Isabelle Perrin, and obtained the highest performer degree (Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste) at the Paris Normal School of Music. He returned to China in 1999 as the chief harpist of the NSO National Symphony Orchestra and has taught in the Music Department of Normal University.

In order to promote the harp and cross-field performances, Xie Xuan founded the Pink Moon Music Theatre. The founding group "Blue Mosaic" was nominated for three Golden Melody Awards. The follow-up works "Red Sarabang", "Shuang囍", "River", "Life Without Borders", etc. also received much attention. In 2015, Xie Xuan organized the first "Taiwan International Harp Festival" and served as the artistic director with many years of practical experience in cross-field performances. The Harp Festival is based on the theme of "Emergence of Light", combined with poetry, song, dance, love, photography and other sub-topics. More than 40 domestic and foreign harpists and artists from all over Europe and Asia are invited to perform in cross-border collaborations, successfully showing the harp Diversified cross-industry possibilities, and won the 2016 Chinese Public Relations Award/Leisure, Culture and Art category silver medal.

In recent years, Xie Xuan has been invited to serve as judges and performers in the famous Nippon International Harp Competition in Japan, as well as Harp Competitions in Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, etc., and served as the deputy convener of the Contemporary Music Committee of the World Harp Congress, active on the international harp stage. Xie Xuan has always maintained a high interest in contemporary music. The "2014 Taipei International Modern Music Festival" is the closing concert of "Xie Xuan and Her Blue Harp". The electronic harp combines electronic sound and light with dancers to present a new audio-visual feast. In 2016, he was invited to be the curator of the "New Ideas Music Exhibition" of the two halls and continued to work hard for contemporary music and interdisciplinary performances.

Xie Xuan served as the Harp Principal of the San Antonio and Knoxville Symphony Orchestras in the United States, and was invited by the Carnegie Hall in New York to hold a harp recital of the "International Winners Series". Since 2000, he has been to Hong Kong every summer to teach in the Asian Youth Management Group (AYO). Xie Xuan was selected as the artist-in-residence of the "Paris International Art Village". In addition, he has published a number of cross-domain albums and travel text works "French Music Madness", poetry and photographic notebooks "Red Sarabon" and so on.
