Dawn Of Paradise is a wonderful Indian classical music release grounded in the meditative aesthetics of the Seni Beenkar Maihar Gharana School of Sarod. Featuring sarod player Anupam Shobhakar and Pandit Anindo Chatterjee - one of the world's leading tabla players - this album is a gem for seasoned lovers of Indian classical music and newcomers alike.
Trained in Indian classical music by Shri Suresh Vyas (a student of the legendary Annapurna Devi), and Ustad Aashish Khan (son of the great Ustad Ali Akbar Khan) - and studying traditional and modern harmony and counterpoint under acclaimed Argentine pianist Santiago Liebson - Anupam represents a rare kind of musician, existing at the intersection of eastern and western musical traditions.
"I'm a child of two separate by intermingling worlds of music", says Anupam. "To truly have the privilege of being a music bridge between the east and the west having had the rare opportunity to extensively study both styles is not something I take for granted." He expresses love for Indian classical greats like Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar, Western classical composers Debussy and Bach, jazz and fusion artists Allan Holdsworth, John Coltrane Mahavishnu Orchestra, and many more.
Anupam's eclectic tastes are mirrored in his diverse musical output - from the ambitious, sprawling east/west fusion of 'Wine Of The Mystic' (2005), to the more traditional Indian classical album 'Dream Theory' (2009). From there, Anupam stretched out with 'Multiplicity' (2016) - a collaborative album with Joel Harrison (and some of New York's finest jazz musicians) - before making a decisive turn in leading progressive metal outfit Book Of Harmony as a composer and lead guitarist. At a young age he was awarded the title of 'Sur Mani' (Jewel of Melody) by the Sur Singar Samsad Bombay, and marks the chance to perform alongside his teacher Ustad Aashish Khan as a clear career highlight.
In the Indian classical world, Anupam has developed a style marked by sombre, meditative alaps and joyous, virtuosic Gatkari explorations. On Dawn Of Paradise he is urged onwards by Pandit Anindo Chatterjee - one of the world's leading tabla players, known for his exceptional rhythmic precision, wonderful sense of melody and mind-bending mathematical skill. Having studied under Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh, Pandit Chatterjee has played alongside Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Shahid Parvez Khan and many more.
In the words of the great Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, we invite you to six back, relax, and let the music take you on a beautiful journey.
