It’s not a day to soon that Caprice Records is re-releasing one the catalogue’s finest productions, previously not even issued on CD.
Art music in India is one of the world’s oldest and richest musical traditions, and yet it is not very well known in the western world. Some musicians have reached success in the West; especially those playing the famous sitar – but just like the Western classical music, the Indian art music heritage is so much richer than that. When the average westerner imagine India’s long history, maharajas wearing turbans or magnificently clad elephants easily come to mind – but how does India actually sound?
Of course, this album gives no complete answer to that question. Instead, it concentrates on a selection of India’s greatest artists in “serious” music – music from the concert hall. A number of India’s most prominent musicians of the 20th century and today perform here, recorded under comfortable conditions in their own homes. And it offers samples of the forms, traditions and instruments that one encounters in Indian music life today.
Meet these cultural ambassadors, who represent a music culture with a heritage that goes back several thousand years, and listen to the music. Like a landscape with accents of rhythm, the melody stands out in bold relief against the ceaseless horizontal line of the drone. For many, this is perhaps a new musical world, an adventure, a new richness. Meet India – an old tradition in a new world.
The vinyl record Indisk Konstmusik was made in connection with the India Festival ‘87; a comprehensive presentation of Indian culture in Sweden in 1987. This production was made possible by the collaboration of Caprice Records, the Swedish Institute, the Swedish Council for Cultural Affairs, the Swedish International Development Authority and The Festival of India committee.
Special thanks are also due to the artists who participated in this recording, for generously putting themselves and their homes at our disposal, as well as to Air India for valuable help.
