The Israeli-born pianist and composer Matan Porat likes to give his programmes a superordinate theme and in doing so creates new relationships between works from different eras and styles. After "Variations on a Theme by Scarlatti" (jpc 2598218) and "Lux" (jpc 8289358) he concludes a recital trilogy for Mirare with "Carnaval". Around the 21 pieces of Robert Schumann's Carnaval op. 9, Porat has woven 23 further pieces by a total of 18 composers - from Couperin to Kurtág. This new Carnaval is intended not only to provide the joy of discovering new music, but also to enable a deeper understanding of the original work.
