"Selige Stunde" is the title of Jonas Kaufmann's new album with a very personal selection of songs by Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, Mahler and others.
Jonas Kaufmann took advantage of the corona-related time out from concert life to fulfill a heart's desire. With his longtime friend and piano accompanist Helmut Deutsch he recorded a large number of favourite songs. The album bears the title of a song by Alexander von Zemlinsky: "Selige Stunde" and contains popular titles such as "Ännchen von Tharau", "Sehnsucht nach dem Frühling" ("Come dear May"), "Adelaide", "Auf Flügeln des Gesanges", "Die Forelle", "Mondnacht", "Widmung", "Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt" or "In mir klingt ein Lied" - and also some rediscoveries, such as
Such
as Zemlinsky's "Selige Stunde" or "Still wie die Nacht" by Carl Bohm (1844-1920
).
Real discoveries are the "Still as the Night", found by Helmut Deutsch in an old song album, as it was found in many musical households in the first half of the 20th century, as well as "Es muss ein Wunderbares sein" by Franz Liszt. Love and longing are the predominant themes / moods in "Selige Stunde". But it is also about farewell, retreat into one's inner being and silence: With "Wandrers Nachtlied II" by Franz Schubert, "Da unten im Tale" by Johannes Brahms, "Verschwiegene Liebe" and "Verborgenheit" by Hugo Wolf, "Allerseelen" by Richard Strauss and Mahler's "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen gekommen", the program includes very different variations of the theme "Empfindsame Seele", which is highly characteristic for each composer.
