Denis Ovan is the creation of Oliver Briggs and Simon Lord. The pair met in Margate having both relocated there, down-from-Londoners. Oliver set up a charity to provide art and music facilities and education for local young people. Simon helped set up the charity’s recording studio and the pair began swapping ideas. Simon introduced Oliver to his own music which he releases on a DIY label called Chalk Sounds.
The pair used the lockdown situation to ignite their collaborative project ‘Denis Ovan’. They combine the art-pop experimentation of Talking Heads, the musical magpie smorgasbord of the Beta Band and the lyrical dexterity and joie de vivre of Alabaster De Plume. DIY culture is close to their hearts, they believe: make something from nothing, share your art without inhibitions, empower everyone around you, everybody in/nobody out.
This approach extends beyond the music to making their own videos, artwork and plans for live shows with more akin to performance art than the traditional band set-up.
