Headed East: Music by contemporary Eastern-European composers. The composer, pianist, conductor and pedagogue Franz Liszt (1811–1886) might, today, awaken many associations: his rootedness in the music cultures of Hungary and Germany, cosmopolitanism and patriotism, tradition and innovation. Travelling in Liszt’s footsteps, the Philharmonisches Orchester Altenburg Gera risked a journey from West to East in 2018 and 2019, performing several symphonic and chamber music works from the rich diversity of Hungarian and Romanian musical landscapes that are largely unfamiliar in the West: Máté Bella, Balász Horváth and Dan Dediu. This production is something truly extravagant!
