Franck Tortiller was born in 1963 in Burgundy into a family of winemakers and amateur musicians. He began his classical percussion studies at the Conservatoire de Dijon, then at the prestigious Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, where at the age of 21 he won a First Prize for Percussion and a First Prize for musical analysis. The same year, he won the Certificate of Aptitude in percussion.

Quickly, he moved to jazz, and won in 1989 the First Prize of soloist and the First Prize of orchestra on the occasion of the National Jazz Competition of La Défense (Paris). Many personal projects in jazz followed with the finest of international musicians (including Mike Manieri, Dave Samuels, Steve Swallow). Meanwhile, Franck Tortiller participates in many albums of iconic French artists such as Juliette Greco, Sanseverino, Arthur H, Juliette, ...

In the 90s, he was contacted by Mathias Rüegg to join the Vienna Art Orchestra where he will be one of the soloists for almost 10 years, marked by musical collaborations with Shirley Horn, Betty Carter, Helen Merril and Billy Cobham.

In 2005, Franck Tortiller was appointed Director of the National Jazz Orchestra. He composes, directs and plays in this orchestra with which he receives the Django d'Or for the best show and gives more than 200 concerts unanimously acclaimed by the critics.

In 2008, when he left the ONJ, Franck Tortiller was rewarded for his musical commitment through a convention of his orchestra by the Ministry of Culture. Along with his many personal projects (trio Ivresses, quartet Purple & High, solo), Franck connects regular collaborations in France and abroad. He is regularly invited to perform in venues such as the Théâtre du Châtelet, Salle Pleyel, Philharmonie de Paris. For 10 years, he has been invited by prestigious orchestras such as the Basel Sinfonietta, the Orchester symphonique de Ulm, the orchestra Pas de Loup, the Provence Alpes Côtes d'Azur Orchestra (in Cannes), the Orchester des Pays de Savoie (Annecy), the Auvergne Chamber Orchestra or the Debussy Quartet.
