While surely not the only recording of Bach's St. John Passion anyone ought to hear, those fascinated by the work & especially those interested in its reception in the 19th century will have to hear it. The reason is simple: this recording is not of the original 1720-something version of the work (scholars are still debating its date of composition), but rather an arrangement done by composer Robert Schumann in 1851. Needless to say, there are many differences between the 2 versions, some very significant, some less so.
1st, 5 of the movements are missing, mostly because of technical reasons: as Schumann well knew, oboe d'amores were not readily available in 19th century Germany.
2nd, the scoring is often quite different, again mostly for technical reasons: not only does a piano replace the harpsichord as the continuo instrument of choice, but Schumann replaces the viola da gamba with a viola &, naturally, uses modern instruments instead of original instruments throughout.
3rd, a few of the movements are transposed either because of the available singer's tessitura or because Schumann wanted a more graceful modulation between movements. 4th, some of the articulation, phrasing, & balances are slightly changed to make the voice leading smoother. The overall effect is to make Bach's music sound much grander & more "Romantic." The performance here with the Rheinische Kantorei & Das Kleine Konzert directed by Hermann Max is more than serviceable - they do nail all the notes - though less than inspirational - the performers rarely sound like they can do more than nail the notes - but listeners who have an overwhelming urge to know what Bach's St. John Passion sounded like to Schumann will still have to hear this 2-disc set. CPO's digital sound is surprisingly viscous.
