Bilateral Music has been gaining attention since the original album was released in 2013, mostly from its usefulness with EMDR (Eye Movement Densensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy, a globally recognized technique for healing painful traumatic memories.
Bilateral Music is a unique collaboration between musician Bryan Cumming and his wife, therapist Holly Cumming.
The use of bilateral stimulation has been part of EMDR since its beginning in 1987, but music has been a relatively new addition to the therapy. In addition to providing bilateral stimulation, when a client listens to the music on headphones, the music also conveys its additional messages of reassurance and peace, since the mood, tempo and texture of the music is gentle, slow, and graceful in its melodic motion.
Because the music is so effective in helping people to process their own traumatic memories in a positive therapeutic setting, it demonstrates its healing function. The tempo of the music matches the range of the human heartbeat at rest, between 60 and 85 beats per minute.
