This Little Big Box provides a splendid overview of George Gershwin's best-known music. Many of the performances are by performers who are not well-known but they bring great skill, insight and entertainment to their renditions of these Gershwin works, such as:
A very enjoyable rendition of Rhapsody in Blue by Christopher O'Riley with the Royal Philharmonic conducted by Barry Wordsworth, as well as a wonderfully-theatrical, colourful and idiomatic four-minute medley of Gershwin themes featuring the Rochester Pops under pops aficionado Erich Kunzel along with the complete overture to Gershwin's musical "Girl Crazy".
Pianist Jerome Lewenthal is joined by the Utah Symphony under Maurice Abravanel in the Piano Concerto in F. This performance features a lot of personality, though it's a bit more classical than jazzy in feel and it's not quite as brilliant and exciting as my favourite readings (Oscar Levant with Kostelanetz/NY Philharmonic and Earl Wild with Fiedler/Boston Pops).
A little-known "lounge" piano quartet headed by pianist George Feyer provides elegant, intimate and loveable readings several Gershwin songs. Also, there's George Gershwin himself appearing via reproduction of his own piano rolls in the original jazz-band version of Rhapsody in Blue, ably accompanied by members of the Denver "Pops" Orchestra under Newton Weyland.
This is not an all-inclusive list of everything in this "Little Big Box" but if you are even remotely interested in exploring Gershwin's music I recommend this set particularly at this price point. Finally, the sound quality is consistently very fine. ~ spaceneedleboy Amazon.com
