Striped Light - For All This Beauty (2026) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: Striped Light

British producer and electronic musician Benge, who grew up on the electronic pop of the 1970s and 80s, spent many years nurturing the idea of Striped Light: a series of pop-leaning vocal tracks featuring a changing group of singers. It was a way for him to step into song-based territory he had never explored before, a kind of cathartic exercise, and it predated his better-known collaborations with John Foxx, Stephen Mallinder and Neil Arthur.

In 2007 he began writing electronic backing tracks, hoping to find an experimental lyricist. That person turned out to be Sam Genders of Tunng, whom Benge knew through a circle of friends around his underground studio complex in Shoreditch, East London. They worked in a room lined with vintage synthesizers: Genders sang melody and lyric ideas until Benge was satisfied. The lyrics came out as stream of consciousness, without fixed meanings, and Benge always had the final say.

Over several years he recorded scores of versions of the songs with different vocalists, finally settling on Hannah Peel, Elizabeth Bernholz (Gazelle Twin), Serafina Steer, Juliana Venter and Tara Busch (I Speak Machine). He had already worked with nearly all of them at MemeTune Studios in Shoreditch, producing or co-producing their early projects. The lineup was completed by bassist Kuma Harada (who has worked with Van Morrison and Billy Ocean), Minimoog player Max Middleton (Jeff Beck, Kate Bush) and guitarist Mike Lindsay of Tunng. John Foxx created the album’s artwork. The singers remember the sessions differently: as a time capsule of innocence and nostalgia (Gazelle Twin), as a decadent love letter to 1980s Hollywood with neon lights, pink sunrises and DeLorean chases (Tara Busch), as the atmosphere of night-time Los Angeles and a freer, less commercialised Shoreditch (Hannah Peel), and as the “scene” of creative people around the Coronet Street studio (Serafina Steer).

Although the tracks were essentially finished, the project was sidelined by Benge’s many other commitments. In 2023 his manager Steve Malins asked what had become of the album. After digging out the old mix files, they found that the recordings, like fine wine, had only improved with time. They were remixed at the refurbished MemeTune Studio, then located in Cornwall, with a classic Neve desk and a collection of vintage 1980s effects and recording gear. The result is For All This Beauty: sparkling electronic alt-pop, nearly 20 years in the making, with an array of vintage synthesisers and the voices of all the singers involved.
