Tenor saxophonist Eddie Miller (1911–1991) was one of the finest and most prolifically recorded players in jazz, yet his contribution has long gone underappreciated. He rose to fame with the Bob Crosby Orchestra and the small group the Bob Cats, where Dixieland and swing reached their peak. His best-known composition is Slow Mood, and he is also celebrated for his clarinet solo on South Rampart Street Parade.
His career can be traced through 50 recordings. It begins with brief solos in 1933 in the Ben Pollack band (Two Tickets To Georgia), followed by exciting playing with Wingy Manone (Isle Of Capri), Louis Prima (Swing Me With Rhythm), Glenn Miller (Solo Hop), Mound City Blue Blowers (High Society) and, especially, Bunny Berigan (Blues). In the 1940s Miller recorded 10 pieces as a leader, including a beautiful trio rendition of Stars Fell On Alabama. In the 1950s he took part in sessions led by clarinettist Matty Matlock, alongside Dick Cathcart and Abe Lincoln; these 14 tracks are regarded as some of the most refined Dixieland ever recorded.
