American band American Motors, formed in 2023 in Lancaster by musicians Dustin White and Alex Steward, has released the album Functional Music. Building on their previous release Content, the project showcases the duo's extensive background in post-rock and the DIY indie scene. Joined by touring bassist Andrew Krause, the new record fuses the abrasive force of post-punk and punk reminiscent of Shellac, The Birthday Party, and Skin Graft Records with lush walls of shoegaze guitars akin to Swervedriver, Slowdive, and Moose.
Recorded at the Magpie Cage studio in Baltimore with producer J. Robbins of Jawbox, the album utilizes the recording studio as an active instrument. Drawing conceptual inspiration from late 1960s and 1970s New Hollywood cinema, the work captures stark interior vignettes and transformative everyday moments through heavy repetition and atmospheric production.
