Producer and recording engineer Randall Dunn, who since the mid-1990s has been the go-to figure for artists seeking a heavy, experimental sound (having worked with Eyvind Kang, Sunn O))), Björk, Daniel Lopatin and Nathan Fielder), has released “Manifold...”, his attempt at science-fiction music. The record is a drone symphony built on analog synthesizers (PPG Wave, Moog Taurus, Korg MS-20) and bass recorder. Its conceptual backdrop is the experience of writer Philip K. Dick: on February 3, 1974, after dental surgery, upon seeing a delivery woman wearing a golden fish pendant, he experienced a flash of pink light and hallucinations of ancient events and technical blueprints. For the rest of his life Dick tried to determine whether it was medical, spiritual or extraterrestrial, writing about it in the novel “VALIS” (1981) and in the 8,000-page journal “The Exegesis” (published in 2011). Dunn reworks Dick’s thoughts on time, reality and mortality.
As co-founder of Kou Records (Oren Ambarchi, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Henry Fraser, Rizan Said), Dunn drew in a wide circle of musicians: Theo Espy (violin on “The Ultimate and Universal Ash”), Henry Fraser (bass), Izaak Mills (woodwinds), Charmaine Lee and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (mantras). Two spoken-word tracks featuring Jim Jarmusch and Laima Leyton establish the concept, and the climax is the finale “Ayn”: the brightest, jazziest track, with elastic rhythms from Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista and alto horn from Briggan Krauss.

01-04 Randall Dunn - Ayn [7:44]
