Ulterior Motives serves as a vivid archive of Dirty Three’s early development. This collection of demos and radio performances, first released in a limited CD edition in 2012, showcases the raw, improvisational style of Warren Ellis, Mick Turner, and Jim White. These recordings give listeners a glimpse into the band’s creative process in its early days—before its official debut. Several tracks capture the musicians working on iconic songs like “Sue’s Last Ride” in a small rehearsal space. The final track, “Deep Waters,” shows the trio refining material that would later appear on the album Ocean Songs. These rare recordings make a compelling case for why Dirty Three are still considered a thrilling live band.
