In 1975, pianist and songwriter Michael Orr, who grew up in Detroit and moved to rural West Virginia, self-released the album Spread Love together with his childhood friend, bassist Carey Harris. Michael had played piano by ear from an early age, drew on Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and Dionne Warwick, formed a band that played local sock hops, and at 14 earned $5 a week as a church choir pianist. As an adult working for the county, he spent every lunch break writing songs on the baby grand in his basement — he dreamed of being a songwriter for others, not a star. He wrote “Feelings” for Gladys Knight; Harris, who played in her band, passed it on, but she turned it down because it didn’t fit the direction she was taking at the time. The two friends then decided to record the material themselves. Michael’s wife sold some of her possessions to pay for studio time, and the album was recorded at Agency Recording Studio in Cleveland with The O’Jays drummer Ricardo “Ricky Speed” Nixon, Adolph Burton and singer Bernardine Mitchell. The cover came from family: his sister-in-law painted the genie and rainbow, and his brother drew the sun/star logo of their label. Major labels, including Buddah, and countless radio DJs rejected the record, and selling copies to shops from the trunk of his car never carried it far enough — Michael stepped away from music for 50 years. The album blends modern soul, classic soul, gospel, early disco and jazz-funk. Its centerpiece is the anthemic title track, recently featured on Luke Una’s compilation É Soul Cultura Vol. 3. Among the best tracks are “Here I Go (Through These Changes Again)”, with a vocal by Michael reminiscent of Gil Scott-Heron (later covered by Johnnie Taylor), “Feelings” sung by Bernardine Mitchell, the opener “Ecstasy, Fantasy & Dreamland” with a flute solo by Michael Neal, the instrumental “A Piece Of Mine” with vibraphone by Bernard James, and the spacey, spiritual “You Opened My Eyes To The World” in the vein of Strata East. For the 50th anniversary the album has been reissued, with the original tapes restored and remastered by Michael’s son Jamal.
