Reality Red is the third album from Melbourne band Bitumen, previously described as industrial post-punk, Bitumen have expanded their sound into something broader, heavier and harder to pin down. Still dark, vicious and dramatic, Reality Red is also more expansive and more focused. What it is, is a brilliant and ambitious Alternative Rock record, encompassing all that that heavy term drags with it, and it is glorious.
Dynamic and layered, Reality Red is driven by propulsive rhythms, blistering guitars and a prowling and intense vocal presence. Songs shift shape moving between genres and tempos, building tension before breaking into something unexpected. There is an underlying physicality to the record: restless, visceral and constantly in motion.
For the first time, live drums enter Bitumen’s established arsenal of guitars, synths, samples and electronic drums, with a guest appearance by Andy Huhtanen McEwan (Tongue Dissolver). His playing brings a new kinetic force to the band’s sound, pushing the songs into more expansive and volatile territory. On the flip side of that Reality Red also shows us Bitumen at their most melodic with some songs featuring acoustic guitar alongside the electric.
At the heart of Bitumen is collaboration. A tight-knit unit, the band develops its music collectively, drawing inspiration from one another as much as from the world around them. Their influences are wide-ranging and voracious: contemporary art, literature, film, culture and music in all its strange and conflicting forms.
Vocalist Kate Binning’s lyrics inhabit that same shifting landscape. Characters emerge and disappear—fictional, imagined, observed and autobiographical—creating a world where the personal and the surreal sit side by side. Her voice moves through these characters with menace, desire and ambiguity, giving Reality Red its particular sense of tension and unease.
Reality Red finds Bitumen stretching beyond the confines of post-punk without abandoning the darkness that brought them there. It is heavier, stranger, more immediate and more expansive—a record that takes the familiar language of rock and pushes it somewhere considerably less comfortable.
GENRE: GOTH ROCK, POST-PUNK, SYNTH-PUNK, DREAM-POP, DARKWAVE, ELECTRONIC ROCK, INDUSTRIAL, ALTERNATIVE, NU METAL
RIYL: KILLING JOKE, GARBAGE, CURVE, LEBANON HANOVER, MEDICINE, EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN, SHE PAST AWAY, SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES, BOY HARSHER, JESUS & MARYCHAIN
