Clarinetist Yannick Thépault, together with his friend, pianist Denis Cuniot, recorded an album of Jewish traditional melodies as reworked by great composers, including non-Jewish ones who drew on ancient Hebrew tunes. The clarinet was chosen deliberately: its wide range, endless palette of nuance and a timbre at times close to the human voice allow it to “give the melody a face” and convey the meaning of the texts through performance — much as a flower is perceived through its fragrance and the imagination.
Thépault stresses the difference in how klezmer is played: in the US, under the influence of jazz, a festive, urban spirit prevails, while in Europe, weighed down by history, the music shifts between laughter and tears. Shostakovich captured this duality, calling Jewish music an ocean of tears with a burst of laughter in the middle. The album’s pieces are free arrangements of the original scores: the harmonic and rhythmic foundation is preserved, while the melodies are reinterpreted. The program opens and closes with traditional themes that reveal the sources of the composers’ inspiration.
