The British label Trunk Records, founded in 1996, is regarded as a pioneer in reissuing non-commercial library music: music recorded not for sale but for use in film, television and other media. It was the first to release the soundtrack to The Wicker Man, as well as unusual archival recordings such as the sounds of computer keyboards and announcements from train buffet cars. The music issued by Trunk Records laid the groundwork for movements such as Hauntology and Folk Horror.
Unlike the 25th-anniversary double LP, which gathered previously issued recordings, this new record consists entirely of material the label has not released before. It includes unreleased slow disco from Roger Webb, scatty breakbeat library music, psychedelia from the backing group of Gabo Szabo (The Advancement), groovy jazz from the Pittsburgh group The Silhouettes, an experimental electronic piece by Basil Kirchin, outsider singing from a hippie who lived in Drop City, a flexi disc advertising the Milton Keynes shopping centre, and improvised jazz for children’s dance workshops. All of it fits on a single LP.
