Ethiopian Musics 1971 — a collection of archival field recordings released by the Sub Rosa label. Recorded by ethnographers Ragnar Johnson and Ralph Harrison in Ethiopia in the summer of 1971, these recordings document the country’s diverse local folk music traditions. The project expands on previous editions, offering a definitive version that includes previously unpublished material of interest to both listeners and historians. Using the professional recording techniques of the time, the creators managed to preserve the emotional depth and cultural significance of a range of musical styles—from urban performances in Addis Ababa to rural folk melodies. This edition highlights the enduring legacy of Ragnar Johnson and Ralph Harrison, whose work opens up Ethiopia’s unique sonic heritage to the world. With this album, Sub Rosa continues its mission to preserve radical creative history, ensuring that these iconic recordings remain accessible for future research and discovery.
