Composer and multi-instrumentalist Amir ElSaffar, internationally renowned for combining the maqam of Iraq and the Arab world with jazz, presents a new work, Ashwaaq. It is a composition for string quartet, santur, and vocalist Khaled AlHafez, a recognized master of the musical tradition of Aleppo, Syria. At its heart is a dialogue: AlHafez’s warm voice, which joins the rigor of his training with graceful interpretation, interacts with the quartet. Together they explore the microtonal resonances of the maqam and attempt to build a polyphony rooted in Arab rather than European tradition.
The poetic basis is Turjuman al-Ashwaaq (The Translator of Desires), a collection of mystical, ecstatic love poems written in the 12th century by the Sufi mystic Ibn Arabi. Its themes are the universal power of love, the inner quest, and the search for unity within the world’s diversity. In this way, poetic and musical heritages meet across cultural and disciplinary boundaries.
