Àbáse’s “Nefelejcs” LP is released on Oshu and marks a return to the Hungarian roots of Berlin-based producer and keyboardist Szabolcs Bognár. The title is the Hungarian word for the forget-me-not flower, which was particularly beloved by Bognár’s late mother, and at the same time means “don’t forget.” Moving between grief, memory, and looking ahead, the album develops a clearly structured yet open sonic language.
Àbáse combines samples and interpolations from Eastern European avant-garde, Hungarian folk music, contemporary classical music, and ethno-jazz with a pronounced affinity for club music and hip-hop. The starting point was a concert with flutist Fanni Zahár in March 2025, which led to important encounters with singer and folk music researcher Hanga Kacsó and cimbalom virtuoso Jenő Lisztes. Among other tracks, both contribute to “Fekete Szem” and “Búsulni Megtanultam.”
For the recordings at Berlin’s Brewery Studios, Bognár brought in bassist Petter Eldh, saxophonist and clarinetist Otis Sandsjö, and drummer Silvan Strauss. Further accents come from Csinszka, Beton.Hofi, Ádám Schwarcz, Marja Burchard, and Ori Jacobson. “Nefelejcs” was produced by Szabolcs Bognár, aka Àbáse, while Erik Breuer handled the recording, mixing, and mastering.
