How can I be objective about Glenn Yarbrough? He’s a friend, one of the two or three best interpreters of my songs (or anyone else’s, for that matter), a man who has always given more to those around him than he expected to get in return.
Whatever Glenn and I may do separately, when we get together, more often than not we make records. It’s almost a habit now, and it has led to his brilliantly performing nearly a hundred of my songs.
This album was recorded in February 1971, between two of Glenn’s many “retirements” (he retires almost as often as Betty Hutton and Maurice Chevalier, though not quite as often as Richard Nixon). Frankly, I can’t imagine him ever really giving up singing, because he loves it too much. As we both said a long time ago, singing is a kind of love, and neither of us has ever thought of it as a business.
Glenn’s capacity for love is as great as he is, and he gives it equally to Annie, to those around him, and to the songs that he makes uniquely his own simply by singing them.
Produced by Rod McKuen.
