Before becoming a solo star in the 1970s, Leon Russell was one of the most in-demand studio musicians in Los Angeles. From 1961 to 1967 he worked as a keyboardist and arranger, serving at the core of the legendary session group The Wrecking Crew. His piano is heard on “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes, where he helped build Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound,” and on “Mr. Tambourine Man” by The Byrds. For Gary Lewis & The Playboys he did not merely play but arranged and conducted “This Diamond Ring,” a US No. 1 hit: his work laid the foundation of the song. He also backed Del Shannon, The Everly Brothers and others, and his playing reinforced the rhythmic backbone of their songs. The compilation gathers these early behind-the-scenes recordings and shows that Leon Russell was far more than a sideman — a master who shaped the structure of 1960s pop music.
