In autumn 1966, the California garage band The Seeds, led by vocalist Sky Saxon, was arguably the rawest and most overtly sensual act in Los Angeles. Their debut album “The Seeds” came out in June and began selling across Southern California, while the single “Pushing Too Hard” got frequent radio play. Through summer and fall the band played the Hollywood club Bido Lito’s alongside Love — the jazz-inflected group run by Arthur Lee, then recording its powerful second album “Da Capo” — and The Doors, where the intellectual, self-assured Jim Morrison and the group’s refined musicianship were making a historic debut. Against this backdrop, The Seeds bet on bestial, sexual energy: Saxon danced from one end of the stage to the other, and the lengthy “Up In Her Room” sent audiences into a trance. The band carried that live tension into the studio, recording their second album “A Web Of Sound” in October 1966. Less than a month after those sessions wrapped, they recorded “A Full Spoon Of Seedy Blues,” an attempt at original blues, riding the momentum of July through October 1966.
