The six-piece Viennese instrumental collective Takeshi’s Cashew, who toured the world with their first two albums, return after a creative break with their third record, Planet Odyssey 64. Like many bands at a crossroads after a second or third release, they were searching for a concept, and found it in the sheer joy of playing together and in retro-gaming nostalgia. Their signature analog cosmofunk has been enriched with electro influences and the sounds of vintage synthesizers; the album’s aesthetic collides medieval worlds with the visual and sonic language of the 1990s Game Boy and Nintendo 64.
The music is built on cyclical figures, like the looped soundtracks of early consoles and the dance music of early royal courts. Just as 8-bit games created atmosphere with minimal means, the musicians deliberately streamlined their toolkit. Recurring melodies and chiptune timbres pay homage to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Pokémon Sapphire Edition. The rhythmic foundation is a hybrid of synthetic and organic elements: a driving Krautrock framework of electric bass and drums, plus a monophonic Roland SH-101 bass synthesizer. The jam session remains part of their method: the track “Operator” was recorded in a single day on a vintage Moog from a family member’s collection. The music aims at transcendence: listeners return from this odyssey transformed and serene. The album is released on clear vinyl, analog tape, and CD in a digisleeve.
