Laura Cannell - Shadows of the Thinnest Veil (2026) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: Laura Cannell

British composer, performer and improviser Laura Cannell has released “Shadows of the Thinnest Veil”, her 20th solo album. The Guardian has called her a “radical neo-medieval musician”, and the new record is an attempt to draw together the different strands of her musical identity. Its core is an octave violin with an almost cello-like tone, improvised on in a medieval church: its raw metallic sound forms the thread around which an intimate wordless voice emerges and a deep, wallowing synth is woven. It continues with a duet of solo fiddles, a lullaby for the hush of night and a scuttling 12-string harp, drawing the listener ever closer to the witching hour. The idea behind the album is that something lies hidden in the dark behind only the thinnest veil, whether in a forest, marshes, or the concrete and brick of a city, and the music unfolds to reveal what is within. Over twelve years, Cannell’s music has become synonymous with folklore, landscape and medieval modes, but in 2026 she embraced long drones, weaving voices and longer, slower breaths of music. In this way her work pushes against the speed of information, creating room to disappear into feelings and textures.
