The independent British label None More Records, founded by Harry Walsh and Sam Bedford, is marking its tenth anniversary with the double vinyl compilation “What Do You Mean By Obsolete?”, made up entirely of new and previously unreleased exclusive work by artists from the label’s orbit. Starting out by promoting gigs for Kokoroko, Vels Trio and Lunch Money Life, the two founders, in their twenties and with no prior label experience, set out to build a lasting support network for musicians they admired. Their only guiding principle was that they both had to love the music, and this instinctive approach gradually grew into a clear identity. The catalogue spans ambient, folk, dub, neo-soul, electronica, psychedelic rock, Balearic house and jungle, and the label deliberately exists between established scenes.
The compilation is sequenced as a journey from day to night. It features Bobby Lee, Joe Harvey-Whyte, Tears Of Nature (the project of Jon Tye of Lo Recordings), Monzanto Sound, Noni-Mouse & Sarathy Korwar, C. Roots & Mali-I, Inês Loubet, Dave De Rose, Romaal Kultan, Hooson & Johnson and Paul Cousins, whose closing track gives the album its title. New material from Orange Can holds a special place: the label has long admired the group, and its return is the result of a years-long search by the founders.
According to Walsh, the common thread is respect for the sonic invention and melodic architecture of the past, combined with music that looks to the future. Against an industry that has turned into a faceless sea of metrics and algorithms, the compilation is conceived as a statement: 100% original music by real artists experimenting and collaborating as a community. For Bedford and Walsh, the release is both a celebration and a declaration of who they are, what they do and why, and the eclecticism of the catalogue should add up to a coherent whole for the listener.
