The 2006 Radiohead tribute compilation Exit Music: Songs with Radio Heads returns to BBE Music for its 20th anniversary reissue. It collects the finest hip hop and dance covers of the band’s songs, ranging from gentle acoustic treatments to raw, funky versions. Contributors include Mark Ronson, Bilal, Sia, Meshell Ndegeocello, Questlove, Sa-Ra, The Cinematic Orchestra, Osunlade and Matthew Herbert. Mark Ronson’s cover of “Just” gave BBE Music its first UK Top 40 single, and the album became an enduring cult classic that paved the way for similar projects such as the David Bowie tribute Modern Love and the Talking Heads tribute Naive Melodies. The idea is not to replace the originals but to lovingly translate well-known songs into another genre, as The Futureheads did with Kate Bush and The Slits with Marvin Gaye. The project builds on the dance-floor potential of Radiohead’s music, long recognised by DJs and producers such as Burial, Flying Lotus and Kendrick Lamar; the band themselves love hip hop and dance music and commissioned remixes from Modeselektor, Madlib, DJ Shadow and Four Tet. Twenty years on, with many contributors now major names, the album’s reputation as a genre-bending classic has only grown.
