Wooley’s album is a set of twelve country and western songs, mostly originals; the exception is the “Rawhide” TV theme written by Dimitri Tiomkin. The singer’s vocal range is too narrow to sustain interest across the whole collection: the songs are decent but unambitious. “The Goodnight-Living Trail,” a piece of history set to music, stands out as the best of them. “Indian Maiden” continues the vein of Wooley’s comedy numbers and is built on the melody of the Merle Travis classic “Smoke Smoke Smoke (That Cigarette).” Tex Owens’ old hit “Cattle Call” also gets an affectionate treatment. The playing is strong, with guitarist Billy Strange and drummer Earl Palmer on the sessions. Still, there are more convincing albums in the same genre by Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, and others.
