Berlin-based Iranian composer Avi Rasti has released her second album, “No One Knows How The Wind Blows”, on Fat Cat’s 130701 imprint, following her delicate debut “The River”. The title piece was written last summer during Iran’s 12-day war: Rasti was safe in Berlin, unable to return home, and watched the horrifying events unfold, powerless to intervene. The music became a way of “holding that moment when everything felt like it could shift at any time.”
The album is experimental contemporary classical: ornate strings flutter around a still, droning tone, creating a dark, melancholy, greyscale atmosphere. Rasti finds a balance between foggy, bleak ambient and austere soundtrack music. On “The Wind Will Take Us Away”, low synthesized subs and vanishing voices recall early Biosphere, while the strings point toward Jóhann Jóhannsson and Sylvain Chauveau. The centerpiece “Tehran” combines piano prepared to sound almost like a santur, percussive bass hits, and xenharmonic string swells that convey the full weight of her emotions.
