The Jamaican family group Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers, made up of Bob Marley’s young children, had released only three singles between 1979 and 1984, which revealed little about their real artistic direction. Their debut album Play the Game Right made it clear. The recording featured former Wailers members and Jamaica’s best session players, whose work is heard on nearly every reggae record of the era, yet the group still found its own identity. An experienced production team under Rita Marley’s supervision achieved a clean sound that blends roots reggae with a gentle pop edge. Fifteen-year-old Ziggy Marley wrote or co-wrote every song but one, showing maturity unusual for his age as both songwriter and vocalist. The weakest track is his father’s composition, a re-recording of the group’s first single, “Children Playing in the Streets.” The rest is varied: joyful dance pieces (“Reggae Is Now”), solid roots songs, more pop-leaning numbers, and Stephen Marley’s first venture into dancehall (“Unuh Nuh Listen Yet”). “Natty Dread Rampage” anticipates the synth-wave hybrids that would soon take over dancefloors worldwide. It is a strong debut that laid the foundation for the group’s later success.
